Queen Elizabeth II, the UK’s longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.

She died peacefully on Thursday afternoon [8th September 2022] at her Scottish estate, where she had spent much of the summer.

On behalf of the residents of Bradley Stoke, Councillors and Staff at the Town Council express their deepest condolences to the Royal Family following the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

Her Majesty the Queen has been a source of inspiration and a role model for life in public service for over seventy years. We sincerely wish that expressions of deep esteem and the gratitude of our nation, for a life so unselfishly given, may act as great comfort and consolation to you all at this time.

Stoke Gifford Parish Council

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was a respected and much-loved leader who carried out her duties tirelessly for the good of the country and Commonwealth. She will be remembered with great fondness and missed by all. RIP your Majesty.

South Gloucestershire Council

The chair of South Gloucestershire Council, Cllr Sanjay Shambhu, has today expressed great sadness following the announcement of the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

Proclamation events

South Gloucestershire

A local reading of the proclamation will be made at Kingswood Civic Centre on Sunday 11th September at 2pm. A live webcast of the local proclamation will be available for members of the public to watch.

Bradley Stoke

The mayor of Bradley Stoke, Cllr Tony Griffiths, other councillors and council staff will be attending the Jubilee Centre at 2.15pm on Sunday 11th September to read the official proclamation of a new monarch. Residents are invited to join them for this short ceremony.

Books of condolence

South Gloucestershire

Books of condolence will be opened at the council’s Badminton Road offices, Yate and the Civic Centre, Kingswood, at 9am on Saturday 10th September.

The council is also hosting an online book of condolence.

Bradley Stoke

Book of condolence opened in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II – at the Jubilee Centre, Bradley Stoke.

A book of condolence has been opened to sign at the Jubilee Centre from Monday 12th September until Tuesday 20th September and will be available between 9am and 5pm. Please note that the site will be closed on Monday 19th September.

Books of condolence are available to sign in the foyers of Holy Trinity Church and Christ the King Church. These will be accessible “during most of the time during the daytime” (for example, Holy Trinity is open from 9:15am-4pm, Mon-Fri).

Little Stoke

A book of condolence will be available to sign at Little Stoke Baptist Church (LSBC) on:

  • Sunday 11th September, 12noon-5pm
  • Monday 12th September, 10am-12noon and 3pm-5pm
  • Tuesday 13th September, 7pm-8pm
  • Wednesday 14th September, 10am-12noon and 3-5pm
  • Thursday 15th September, 9am-12noon

There is also a floral tribute area in front of the church.

Book of condolence opened in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II – at Little Stoke Community Hall.

Stoke Gifford Parish Council has placed a book of condolence in the foyer of Little Stoke Community Hall. Accessible during council office hours (Mon 9am-12noon & 2pm-4pm; Tue-Fri 9am-12noon) and when the building is in use by hirers or Little Stoke Community Café is open.

Stoke Gifford

A book of condolence is available in the St Michael’s Centre, North Road, where there is also an area for private prayer and reflection. These are available Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, and Saturday morning until 11.30am, as well as during worship times on Sunday.

An area for floral tributes has been set aside on The Green.

Patchway

A book of condolence will be available to sign from Friday 9th September at the council offices (Callicroft House, Rodway Road). Open to 4pm every week day up until the date of the funeral.

The Anglican parish of Bradley Stoke is holding a service of commemoration and thanksgiving for the life of Queen Elizabeth II, at Christ the King Church on Sunday 18th September, starting at 6:30pm.

Event cancellations & postponements

Council meetings

Stoke Gifford parish Council: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II and send our condolences to the Royal Family. As a mark of respect the Full Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday 13th September is cancelled.”

The meeting of Bradley Stoke Town Council (Full Council) scheduled for Wednesday 21st September has been rescheduled for Wednesday 28th September.

Tour of Britain

The organisers of the Tour of Britain cycling race, which was due to pass through South Gloucestershire on Friday 9th September, have announced the cancellation of the final three stages of the race, as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth ll. Read more…

Rugby

Following the deeply sad passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, tonight’s Gallagher Premiership match between Bristol Bears and Bath Rugby has been rescheduled. The match will now take place on Saturday 10th September at 17:30.

Football

The EFL has confirmed that fixtures this weekend have been postponed as a mark of respect following the Queen’s death. Bristol City were due to face Preston North End at Ashton Gate in the Championship on Saturday, while Bristol Rovers were set to travel to Stadium MK to face MK Dons in League One.

The FA: As a mark of respect, following the passing of Her Majesty the Queen, English football has united to postpone all football fixtures, including those at grassroots level, between 9th and 11th September. Read more…

National Moment of Reflection

The National Moment of Reflection will take place at 8pm on Sunday 18th September, the night before the state funeral, and be marked by a one-minute silence.

State funeral

Monday 19th September, the date of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral, will be a national bank holiday.

  • Schools will be closed
  • Royal Mail postal services will be suspended
