The weather is colder and darker, and Christmas has been and gone. During the winter season, we tend to feel less motivated to get active. Bad weather, and a lack of sunlight can lower the brain’s levels of serotonin, the ‘happy’ hormone, and a winter workout can literally give you the chills! Globally, it’s been a tough time for everyone, with worldly events having a huge impact on mental health and wellbeing.

One of the best ways to tackle feeling the blues this winter is by getting active. The more people focus on their health and wellbeing and interact with others, the more colourful the world gets, no matter how dark it may feel outside.

Regular exercise can have a profoundly positive impact on physical health as well as anxiety, depression, and much more. Activity helps promote the growth of new neurons in the key areas of the brain and releases endorphins trapped in the body as a result of pain or stress, triggering that feeling of euphoria.

It can be hard to exercise on your own, but Active Lifestyle Centres has everything our local communities need to achieve their health and fitness goals together this winter, from fitness classes to state-of-the-art gyms, swimming, climbing and activities for kids, there is a thriving community for health and fitness waiting for you.

“I have been coming to Bradley Stoke for years. I couldn’t be more thankful because it has given me back my confidence, strength, and social life. I especially like coming to the gym because of the gym staff who are friendly; I always enjoy our chats.” – Alex, Bradley Stoke

Active Lifestyle Centres are located across South Gloucestershire in Bradley Stoke, Kingswood, Longwell Green, Thornbury, and Yate, and are run by Circadian Trust, an independent charitable company who reinvest any profit back into local Active Lifestyle Centres.
