Parents of children attending Holy Trinity School in Bradley Stoke are calling for a safer pedestrian crossing on busy Pear Tree Road after several “near misses”.
The road is a main access route in the town, but despite having a zebra crossing [Google Streetview], parents claim that cars are still exceeding the speed limit and putting children’s lives at risk.
One local parent, Tara Monks, whose children Jessica and Charlie attend the school said:
“I’ve seen cars speed up to the zebra crossing and have to slam on their brakes to stop. We need a safe place for children to cross and signs to slow down the traffic.”
Local Councillor Jon Williams, who represents Bradley Stoke North on South Gloucestershire Council (SGC), is supporting Tara and other parents and will be presenting a petition to an SGC meeting today (Wednesday) asking the Council to take action to make the crossing safer for children attending the school.
Cllr Williams said:
“As a governor at Holy Trinity School, I became aware of the concerns about the crossing on Pear Tree Road and made contact with Tara to see if I could help.”
“The petition is the first stage to get this problem sorted out and I will be holding a meeting with parents and officers from South Gloucestershire Council to update the school’s Travel Plan which I hope will support the case for an improved crossing facility and better signage to slow down the traffic.”
