The first phase of work to install additional traffic calming measures on Stoke Lane will now commence on Monday 22nd August 2022 with a road closure lasting for two weeks, South Gloucestershire Council has announced.

The work will see the installation of a new speed table and two new sets of speed cushions. An existing dropped-kerb crossing will also be upgraded with tactile paving.

The road closure was originally advertised as lasting four weeks and was due to start on Monday 8th August, but was postponed just days before.

The council now says the decision to postpone was made to “ensure traffic was flowing smoothly along Gipsy Patch Lane and in the wider area, before another scheme was started”.

Editor’s note: Gipsy Patch Lane reopened in the early hours of Monday 8th August (following a two-week full closure), the same day the Stoke Lane road closure was originally  due to begin.

The council has now split the work into two phases, with a two-week 24/7 full closure of Stoke Lane in August followed by “further work in September”

The traffic calming scheme being implemented was rejected by a majority of respondents in a public consultation held in 2019. It is also opposed by Stoke Lodge and The Common Parish Council.

Further details of the scheme and the consultation responses can be found in an earlier Journal article.

Stoke Lane, from Amberley Road to its junction with Stokemead, will be closed for a period of two weeks, starting Monday 22nd August, to carry out initial works that include:

  • New drainage and kerbing in preparation for the speed table between the junctions of Amberley Road and Shellmor Avenue

Shorter section closed

UPDATE added 31st August 2022.

Stoke Lane closed for roadworks on Wednesday 31st August 2022. Closure is currently between the junctions with Amberley Road and Shellmor Avenue, but may change.

On Wednesday 31st August the road closure was limited to the section of Stoke Lane between its junctions with Amberley Road and Shellmor Avenue. At 3pm there was no sign of any work in progress, cones having been placed along the kerbline over a short section on the south side of Stoke Lane where work has been carried out in the pavement.

It was noted that Stoke Lane was fully open to traffic over the previous bank holiday weekend (27th/29th August), although buses continued to use the diversion route.

A notice at the Bourton Avenue bus stop states that the stop is suspended and advises passengers to use stops on Gipsy Patch Lane or Gloucester Road. However, note that a report on social media [link] says that a First Bus driver on a northbound Y6 journey refused to stop on Gipsy Patch Lane, so it’s advisable to follow First’s advice and use the Winterbourne Road stops on Hatchet Road.
