Met Office AMBER weather warning for extreme heat, valid for 17th-19th July 2022.

On Wednesday 13th July 2022, the Met Office issued an AMBER weather warning of extreme heat in our area over the period 00:00 on Sunday 17th July to 23:59 on Tuesday 19th July. A RED weather warning of extreme heat was issued for other parts of England.

A hot spell is likely to develop from Sunday, likely peaking early next week, leading to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure.

What to expect

  • Population-wide adverse health effects are likely to be experienced, not limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat, leading to potential serious illness or danger to life. Government advice is that 999 services should be used in emergencies only; seek advice from 111 if you need non-emergency health advice.
  • Substantial changes in working practices and daily routines likely to be required.
  • Significantly more people are likely to visit coastal areas, lakes and rivers leading to increased risk of water safety incidents.
  • Delays on roads and road closures are possible, along with delays and cancellations to rail and air travel, with potential for significant welfare issues for those who experience even moderate delays.

Weather observations

Observations from our nearest weather station at Almondsbury.

Monday 18th July 2022

Temperatures peaked at 14:00 and 18:00, when a reading of 35 degrees was recorded.

The precise maximum reading was 35.3 degrees, which is a new all-time record for the Avon area, the previous record being 34.7 degrees registered on 19th July 2006 at Filton Airfield.

Tuesday 19th July 2022

The temperature peaked at 33 degrees at 11:00. Later peaks of 32 degrees were recorded at 14:00 and 18:00. There was a short period of rain (approx. 10min) at around 15:40 in Bradley Stoke.
