This morning we witnessed a complete state of vandalism, litter and destruction at the Jubilee Green play area.

We arrived with three young children, aged 3, 3 & 5 at approximately 10.30am this morning to find broken glass bottles used for Molotov-looking cocktails smashed over the play area, fireworks casings and rocket boxes, food and energy drinks litter strewn all over the playground. The bin by the undercover seating area had been ripped out and upended, with the concrete base smashed.

Before we became aware of the full extent of the chaos, our children could easily have been badly injured on the glass shards. Of course we couldn’t leave it in such a state so spent an hour tidying up the area and put the bin back upright in its place, albeit with a smashed base.

Judging by the litter, firework casing and rocket launch boxes, Kentucky Fried Chicken boxes, crisp packets, sweet wrappers and energy drinks cans, this was clearly the work of older children. There was even a broken school sports rucksack and accompanying bits of homework left lying on the grass.

This is obviously the work of older children in the immediate local area, who are allowed to hang out there unsupervised with no repercussions for their extremely destructive behaviour. Where are the parents and where are the local authorities such as the police keeping an eye on such obvious meeting points for these juvenile delinquents?
