Rabbit Roundabout: Three weeks of overnight road closures start Wednesday

With the improvement work at Great Stoke Roundabout (a.k.a. Rabbit Roundabout) now “nearly complete” (three months ahead of schedule), a series of overnight road closures is due to begin this Wednesday (5th August 2020) to allow resurfacing of the carriageway to be carried out.

The road closures will be in place Monday to Friday 8pm to 6am until Friday 28th August [1].

During each overnight closure, the roundabout will be closed to through traffic from all directions.

Between 8pm and 6am a signed diversion route will be in place via the B4058 Bristol Road (Winterbourne to Hambrook), A4174 Ring Road (Hambrook to Filton) and the A38 Gloucester Road (Filton to Aztec West).

An alternative signed diversion route will be available via the B4058 Bristol Road (Winterbourne to Iron Acton), B4059 Church Road (Iron Acton to Rudgeway) and A38 Gloucester Road (Rudgeway to Aztec West).

The diversion routes will be signed in both directions.

Those needing access to Stoke Gifford and Little Stoke overnight are advised to use the A4174 Ring Road, Brierly Furlong and Hatchet Road.

The recommended route into Bradley Stoke during the overnight closures is via the A38 Gloucester Road and Bradley Stoke Way.

During the overnight closures at Great Stoke Roundabout there will be alternative diversion routes in place for those trying to access Gipsy Patch Lane (which is currently closed at the railway bridge).

During the day, the existing Gipsy Patch Lane diversion route, via Bradley Stoke Way and the A38 Gloucester Road, will remain in place.

Readers are reminded that another route out of Bradley Stoke, Trench Lane, is closed at the motorway bridge until 3rd September 2020.

Bus diversions

Services M1 MetroBus & T1 towards Bristol from Bradley Stoke Way will turn right at Great Meadow Roundabout into Baileys Court Road, left at the second next one into Orpheus Avenue across two roundabouts into Hatchet Road, under Parkway Station Bridge onto Brierly Furlong, taking the 2nd exit left into Fox Den Road, next roundabout take 3rd exit into Great Stoke Way and left at next one onto A4174 to resume normal route.

Services M1 MetroBus & T1 heading towards Cribbs Causeway will operate the reverse of the above.

The bus stops Great Stoke and Harry Stoke will not be served.

Service Y6 heading towards Chipping Sodbury will operate normal route as far as Parkway Station. After serving Parkway Station will turn left under Parkway Station Bridge onto Brierly Furlong take 2nd exit left into Fox Den Road, next roundabout take 3rd exit into Great Stoke Way and left at next one onto A4174 across M32 roundabout, then turn left at traffic lights into Bristol Road to resume normal route at Winterbourne village.

This will only affect the 20:40 journey towards Chipping Sodbury.

Service Y6 towards Southmead Hospital will be unaffected.

The bus stops Great Stoke and Harry Stoke will not be served.

On-site signage has now been changed to indicate a four-week closure.

South Gloucestershire Council says the original signs indicating a six-night closure (see top of page) were “put out in error”.


Update (11th August 2020)

South Gloucestershire Council has today confirmed that the end date remains as Friday 28th August (weather permitting).


Update (27th August 2020)

South Gloucestershire Council has today announced that overnight closures of Great Stoke (Rabbit) Roundabout are to be extended by one week until Friday 4th September 2020 as recent wet weather has impeded road surface laying.
