A432 Badminton Road M4 overbridge

National Highways closed the A432 Badminton Road overbridge (on the main road between Bristol and Yate) on Wednesday 12th July 2023 after finding “accelerated deterioration and cracking” to the south-east underside of the structure, which was built in 1966.

M4 and M5 safety enhancements

Collages of two photos showing demolished central barrier on a motorway.
Central barrier being removed from M4 near Bristol.

A six-mile section of motorway around the Almondsbury Interchange is being upgraded, to further improve driver safety.

The work, on the M4 between junction 19 for Bristol and where it meets the M5 at the Almondsbury interchange, and on the M5 to junction 17 at Cribbs Causeway, includes:

  • Upgrading a 4-mile section of existing steel barrier to concrete in the central reservation of the M4 around Almondsbury interchange
  • Building three new emergency areas on the M5
  • Upgrading traffic signs to provide better information for drivers
  • Drainage work
  • Renewing lighting
  • Additional CCTV cameras

To minimise disruption while work to upgrade the barrier is carried out on the M4 and M5, three lanes will remain open to traffic in each direction. However, one lane will be closed on each of the motorways, and the remaining lanes slightly narrowed, to help create a safe working area for the workforce.

The work will be closely coordinated with upcoming maintenance projects to refurbish two bridges at the junction 15 and 16 interchanges on the M5, which is expected to start this spring, sharing roadworks and resources to reduce disruption for drivers as much as possible.

The work began in February 2023 and is planned to complete in [“winter 2023“] “summer 2024”.

M5 bridge repairs

The bridges on the M5 at junctions 15 (Almondsbury Interchange) and 16 (A38 Aztec West / Filton / Thornbury) are now over 50 years old and in need of refurbishment. Waterproofing, surfacing, expansion joints and repairs to the concrete are needed to maintain bridge deck integrity. This is part of ongoing bridge refurbishment works by National Highways.

This work has been intentionally organised to overlap with the M4/M5 dynamic hard shoulder enhancements project – reducing how long traffic management will be in place and enabling contractors to share resources and cut costs.

The M5 bridge refurbishment works have been planned to avoid the peak summer getaway season, but some preparatory work will be carried out in advance.

  • Commencing Monday 31st July 2023 for approximately one month – overnight closures in place M5 J15 to 17, from 8pm to 6am, subject to traffic flows
  • September 2023 – installation of 24/7 narrow lanes and continue preparation works which will include the construction of a crossover
  • October 2023 – switch to contraflow. This will enable access to the bridge decks to begin the bridge refurbishment works. The bridge deck works will be carried out in four distinct phases, each one requiring a change in the contraflow layout.
