Star of the Stokes: Adam Jones

Star of the Stokes Awards 2016. L-r: Nick Einhorn (event host), Adam Jones (winner of the Champion Carer Award), Caroline Flynn (Milestones Trust).

Award: Champion Carer (sponsored by Milestones Trust)

Nominated by: Jo Russell

No. 2 in our series looking at the stories behind the eight Stars of the Stokes award winners honoured earlier this year at a presentation dinner held at the Hilton Bristol Hotel, following a call for nominations promoted in the Bradley Stoke Journal magazine.

Adam Jones was nominated by Jo Russell for caring for his wife and for putting his life on hold to do so. Adam and his wife, Sharon, have two children and went from having a ‘normal’ family life to a situation where Sharon was bedridden. Sharon recently had an operation which she had been waiting two years for. During this time, Adam has done everything he can to care for her. Hopefully, the operation will make things easier for the family. Adam has won this award for his care and dedication.

Jo said about the award:

“I think Adam and his two children do an amazing job. Adam not only cares for Sharon, he is also always there for his elderly parents. I was so pleased to hear Adam won the award, such a great achievement for him and his family, he definitely deserves it!”

Adam said about receiving the award:

“I was so surprised when I heard that Jo had nominated me, and totally shocked to win this award. I have been looking after Sharon since 2009 and increasingly over the years my severely disabled parents. Since I have been caring for someone full time I have lost touch with my friends and work colleagues, this left me feeling isolated and alone. Then to find out that they are not only still thinking of me but think I deserve an award for what I do, that not only raises my spirits but left me feeling so blown away.”
