Bradley Stoke Town Council is to stage a beacon lighting event on Thursday 2nd June 2022 to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The event will take place between 9.15pm and 10.15pm on Jubilee Green, Savages Wood Road BS32 8HL [view location map], with the beacon being lit at 9.45pm.

The Bradley Stoke beacon will be one of more than 2,000 lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, along with one in each of the capital cities of Commonwealth countries, in recognition of the Queen’s long and selfless service.

The town council has spent £490 on purchasing a free-standing gas-fuelled beacon in order to take part in the ritual, following a decision made at March’s Full Council meeting. The meeting minutes state:

“Following discussion, Cllr Angela Morey proposed that a 21CC Beacon be purchased at a cost of £490 + VAT, with a total funding of £600 allocated from 2022/23 Community Development Grant Aid budget for the event; seconded by Councillor Andy Ward. A vote was taken, 7 in favour, 1 abstention, proposal carried.”

Efforts are being made to find a bugler or piper to play a short piece of music as the beacon is lit.

An information page about the event on the town council website states:

“Attendance is free and we would advise getting there in plenty of time as accurate lighting times need to be adhered to.”

“Please also be aware that this is a standing event. Please park at The Willow Brook Centre and walk across.”

“Well-behaved dogs are welcome; please ensure they are kept on a lead and you have appropriate materials to clean up after them.”

A crowd of around 300 people attended the event on the football pitch at the Jubilee Centre.

The bugler who had been booked to play was unable to attend due to sickness, but a local trumpet player kindly stepped in as a last-minute substitute.

Cllr Angela Morey wrote in a Facebook post:

“An amazing evening celebrating the Platinum Jubilee by lighting our beacon In Bradley Stoke with the community.”

“Couldn’t quite believe how many people came along, it was wonderful to see you all.”

“Finley saved the day by stepping in to play the trumpet, a beautiful piece of music called Majesty.”

“Catherine Fish and her beautiful voice sang two songs, whilst signing BSL at the same time, a real treat and privilege.”
