Tesco criticised for poor publicity over temporary closure of Baileys Court store

Customers of the Tesco Express convenience store at Baileys Court in south Bradley Stoke have complained of being poorly informed about a near four-week temporary closure of the shop that began on Sunday afternoon (17th October 2021).

The closure is understood to be needed for an “extensive refresh” of the store to be carried out.

This week has seen a steady stream of motorists and pedestrians arriving at the store only to be confronted with a large ‘TESCO SHUT’ sign on one of the red and white plastic barriers that now surround the building.

No further details, such as an anticipated reopening date, were displayed at the site when the Journal checked on both Wednesday and Friday this week.

The store page on the Tesco website indicates ‘Closed’, but again gives no further details.

One Journal reader commented on our Facebook page:

“Just found that Tesco Express Baileys Court closed, apparently for refurbishment. Have been unable to find anything about this on Tesco website. Anybody know when due to reopen and why not well publicised?”

In response to an enquiry from the Journal, a spokesperson for Tesco said:

“Our Baileys Court Tesco Express is currently closed whilst we undertake an extensive refresh of the store. A temporary store will open in the coming days before the main store re-opens in mid-November. We apologise for any inconvenience due to the temporary closure but look forward to providing customers with an even better shopping experience when the store reopens.”

Despite being asked for precise dates of the opening of the ‘temporary store’ and the final reopening, the spokesperson offered no further information and didn’t reply to subsequent emails.

However, a photograph circulating on social media of a notice that was displayed inside the store prior to the closure shows the following timeline:

  • Store closes: Sunday 17th October 2021, 4pm
  • Pop-up shop open: Tuesday 26th to Sunday 31st October 2021
  • Final reopening: Thursday 11th November 2021

This post will be updated should we hear back with contradictory information from the Tesco press office.
