Bradley Stoke & North Bristol news in brief.

The Bradley Stoke Safer and Stronger Community Group meets this Thursday (7th February) at Baileys Court Activity Centre (7pm start). The group provides an opportunity for local residents to have their say about the services that the local community receives. Participants include people who live and work in the area and representatives from the local police, Avon Fire & Rescue, NHS South Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire Council, Bradley Stoke Town Council, Southern Brooks Community Partnership and other local organisations. Thursday’s meeting will also hear presentations about the Filton Patchway and the Stokes Volunteer Centre and the West of England MS Therapy Centre. Read more …

Bradley Stoke looks set to live on in the name of the local parliamentary constituency for at least one more General Election after plans to redraw constituency boundaries were defeated in the House of Commons. The Boundary Commission had proposed that the existing constituency of Filton and Bradley Stoke be modified to include Thornbury, whilst losing Downend and Staple Hill. The new constituency would have been called South Gloucestershire West but the defeat means the changes won’t now come into force until after the next General Election. Read more …

The Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Avon and Somerset, Sue Mountstevens, visits North Bristol this Thursday (7th February) when she will be in Patchway to hear the views of residents, community groups, business organisations, victims of crime and other stakeholders. The visit is part of a consultation being carried out prior to the production of a five-year Police and Crime Plan which addresses the policing and community safety needs of the area. Patchway is to get a 24-hour bus service from March. The no. 75 (Hengrove to Cribbs Causeway) service will run hourly in both directions from midnight to 5am, six nights a week. Bradley Stoke remains without a night bus service, despite First Group putting on extra late night journeys on the 73 service (the extra services only run on the section of route between Parkway Station and Bristol city centre). The Sort It! civic amenity site in Station Road, Little Stoke, has closed for two weeks to allow essential maintenance work to be carried out. It is scheduled to re-open on Monday 18th February. During the temporary closure, the remaining three Sort It! Centres, at Yate, Mangotsfield and Thornbury will be open as usual every day from 8am to 4:30pm. Read more in the Stoke Gifford Journal …

The Stoke Gifford branch of the Royal British Legion is holding a concert to raise funds for its 2013/14 Poppy Appeal. The event features the Westerley Showband and takes places on Saturday 23rd February in the Old School Rooms, Stoke Gifford. Advance tickets are £5 (£6 on the door).
